UFC Seattle Was Incredible: Can UFC Vegas 103 live up to the hype?

UFC Vegas 103 has some tough shoes to fill after an incredible UFC Seattle card. Regarding potential, UFC Vegas 103 has all the makings of a great night of fights.

In the main event, fresh flyweight title contenders Manel Kape and Asu Almabayev battle for a chance to fight Alexandre Pantoja. In the co-main event, Cody Brundage takes on short notice replacement Julian Marquez. Both guys love to bang and it would be surprising to see that fight go to the judges’ scorecards.

What about the rest of the card? Here’s a look at the most underrated fights at UFC Vegas 103.

Charles Johnson vs. Ramazan Temirov

Are you a fan of the flyweights? They’re some of the best fights the UFC has to offer. Extremely quick, very technical, and an improving roster with growing talent. Ramazan Temirov represents that to perfection. He spectacularly won his UFC debut and is riding a 10-fight win streak with five straight first-round finishes.

Charles Johnson is a dark horse in the flyweight division, riding a four-fight win streak after losing three straight. He’s improved drastically and finds ways to stay in the fight. If this fight gets to a third round, expect fireworks early, with a grueling battle over three rounds. With another big win, Johnson will surely enter the UFC title picture.

Douglas Silva de Andrade vs. John Castaneda

Douglas Silva de Andrade is one of the ageless wonders of the UFC. Despite being 39 years old, he continues to fight the UFC’s best, and John Castaneda is another tough opponent. While this fight could start super technical, it could become a brawl if both guys start landing big punches.

Castaneda is coming off a loss to Daniel Marcos and is 4-3 overall in the UFC. De Andrade is 7-6 in the UFC losing to some of the best fighters over the last decade. This is the perfect matchup of world-class skill and experience versus youth and hunger. This has all the makings of a grueling, three-round battle of attrition.

Ricardo Ramos vs. Chepe Mariscal

For all the grappling and wrestling fans, this one’s for you. Ricardo Ramos has improved striking but he’s always been dangerous on the ground. He fights with a kill-or-be-killed mentality but hasn’t been able to beat higher-level competition. In his best UFC win yet, he beat Josh Culibao via split decision in his last fight.

Stylistically, Chepe Mariscal might be Ramos’ toughest test yet. Before the Culibao fight, Ramos dropped two straight via guillotine choke, and Mariscal will force Ramos into bad positions. He’s riding a seven-fight win streak and hasn’t lost since 2020. The best part of his wins is he’s taking down some highly-touted prospects like Trevor Peek and Morgan Charriere. Expect another world-class performance from both fighters.

Danny Barlow vs. Sam Patterson

Danny Barlow is 9-0 with some impressive finishes under his belt. He’s 2-0 since winning on the Dana White Contender Series but missed weight in his last fight. The most memorable moment for Barlow so far is when he finished Josh Quinlan. He smelled blood in the water and chased the finish.

Barlow will have to avoid the ground with Sam Patterson after his last few showings in the UFC. After winning his fight on DWCS, Patterson lost to Yanal Ashmouz but followed that up with two straight first-round submission victories. While Barlow presents a danger on the feet, Patterson could find a choke if it hits the ground. This should be a fun battle from start to finish.

Nasrat Haqparast vs. Esteban Ribovics

If violence is your thing, Nasrat Haqparast against Esteban Ribovics is your main event.

Haqparast has an underrated UFC record, losing only to Bobby Green, Dan Hooker, and Marcin Held. Since 2022, he’s 4-0 in the UFC with solid wins over Jared Gordon and Jamie Mullarkey. His opponent, Esteban Ribovics, is in a very similar position. He’s 3-0 in his last three UFC fights and is soaring up the ladder after finishing Terrance McKinney and a fight-of-the-year candidate against Daniel Zellhuber last September.

This fight should stay standing and will be a war. Similar to the Zellhuber fight, if the fight goes to a decision, it will showcase both guys having their moments. Those are usually the most fun. Expect absolute fireworks in this one, with the potential of them taking home fight of the night honors.

UFC Vegas 103 may not have the big names or the consistency of UFC Seattle, but it could still be a banger. The main card features several fighters willing to bang while the overall theme supports a flourishing flyweight division. If there’s anything to get excited about, it’s the idea that fresh blood is joining the higher ranks in stale divisions.
